Italian occupies a distinctive position among European languages — simultaneously a major industrial economy language and a language with one of the sharpest register gaps between formal and informal usage. Italian legal and official language is notoriously dense, formal, and structurally unlike everyday Italian. A translator who handles one register well does not automatically handle the other.

What makes Italian translation different
Every language creates its own problems. These are the ones that decide whether Italian work succeeds or has to be redone.
Italy is one of Europe’s largest exporters of industrial machinery, and Italian-source technical writing favours long sentences, heavy nominalisation and passive constructions. Carried literally into English or German the result is technically accurate and almost unreadable. Restructuring at sentence level is part of the translation, not an optional edit.
Under the Machinery Directive, documentation must be marked either as the original instructions or as a translation of them, and machinery supplied in Italy must carry Italian-language instructions. The labelling distinction is not cosmetic — we apply it correctly rather than leaving you to discover it during an inspection.
Italian runs roughly 15% longer than English and builds long prepositional noun phrases where English compounds nouns directly. Fixed-width labels, UI strings and packaging fields sized for English need slack, and we measure it against your content before layout.
Italian translation: common questions
Can you handle full machinery manuals with layout?
Yes. We work directly in InDesign, FrameMaker and XML documentation systems, which is how the Italian expansion problem gets solved while the layout is still open rather than after artwork is signed off.
Do you translate legal Italian for contracts and tenders?
Yes, with translators whose background is legal rather than general. Italian legal and administrative register is markedly more formal than commercial Italian, and public tender documentation in particular has fixed formulations that must be reproduced, not paraphrased.
Are your Italian translations accepted for official submission?
For most commercial, corporate and technical purposes our certification is accepted. Italy also operates a sworn translation (traduzione giurata) procedure before a court for certain official uses. Tell us the receiving authority and we will tell you which of the two your document requires.
