Chinese (Simplified and Traditional) is an active part of our translation and interpreting work — particularly for manufacturing clients with Chinese-language operations, financial institutions with Chinese counterparties, and organizations distributing products in Chinese-speaking markets.

Our Chinese translators are native Chinese speakers working into their first language, with subject-matter expertise in the relevant domain. We provide both Simplified Chinese (mainland China, Singapore) and Traditional Chinese (Taiwan, Hong Kong) as required.

What we translate in Chinese

The document types that make up most of our Chinese workload, each handled by translators with a background in that field.

Product and technical documentation

Manuals, specifications, labelling and safety documentation for products manufactured in or exported to Chinese-speaking markets.

Regulatory and compliance material

Certification and compliance documentation for products entering the mainland Chinese market.

Contracts and corporate documents

Supply agreements, joint venture documentation and corporate records for Chinese counterparties.

Patents and technical filings

Patent specifications and technical filings, where terminological precision determines the scope of what is protected.

What makes Chinese translation different

Every language creates its own problems. These are the ones that decide whether Chinese work succeeds or has to be redone.

01
Simplified and Traditional are different standards, not fonts

Simplified Chinese serves mainland China and Singapore; Traditional serves Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. The difference goes beyond character forms into vocabulary, particularly in technical and IT terminology, where the same concept has genuinely different accepted terms. Converting one to the other mechanically produces text that is readable and visibly wrong.

02
Volume is counted in characters, not words

Chinese is written without spaces between words, so word counts are not meaningful and pricing works on characters. A 1,000-word English source does not become "1,000 words" of Chinese, and quotes that pretend otherwise are hiding an assumption. We state the basis on the quotation.

03
Fonts and layout fail silently

Chinese text occupies roughly 40–50% less horizontal space than English, leaving gaps in layouts designed for Latin script, and it requires a proper CJK font. Substitute a Latin font and characters render as empty boxes — an error a non-reader will not catch at proof stage, and one that reaches print. We handle CJK typesetting rather than handing back a file for someone else to break.

Chinese translation: common questions

Simplified or Traditional — which do we need?

Simplified for mainland China and Singapore; Traditional for Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. If you are covering both, they are two targets with two translators, not one translation converted twice. We will say so at quotation rather than after delivery.

How do you price Chinese translation?

On character count for Chinese source, and on source word count when translating into Chinese. Either way the basis is stated on the quotation, so you are comparing like with like against other providers.

Can you handle Chinese typesetting?

Yes — CJK fonts, line-breaking rules and layout in InDesign and comparable tools. This matters more than it sounds: font substitution errors in Chinese are invisible to anyone who does not read the script, and they survive right through to print.
