Hungarian is a Uralic language unrelated to any other major European language, which makes it one of the most challenging translation directions for organizations operating in Central Europe. The lack of cognates with Indo-European languages means that general translators with only language training frequently produce results that are technically correct but register-inappropriate or terminology-inconsistent.

Our Hungarian translators are native Hungarian speakers with subject-matter expertise across technical, legal, financial, medical, and commercial domains. We have the deepest Hungarian translation capability of any agency in our network — built over 27 years of operation from Budapest.

What makes Hungarian translation different

Every language creates its own problems. These are the ones that decide whether Hungarian work succeeds or has to be redone.

01
Hungarian is agglutinative, and software breaks on it

Grammatical relationships that English carries in prepositions are expressed in Hungarian by suffixes stacked onto the word itself. Interface strings assembled from fragments — "Delete " + item + "?" — cannot work, because the suffix on the item depends on the sentence around it. Hungarian localization needs whole-sentence strings with placeholders. Discovering this after the strings are extracted is expensive; we raise it before.

02
Word-for-word English produces correct, foreign text

Hungarian has no grammatical gender and orders its words by topic and focus rather than by fixed syntax. A translation that follows the English word order can be entirely grammatical and still read unmistakably as a translation. Getting this right is what separates a Hungarian text people trust from one they merely understand.

03
Certification in Hungary is a two-track system

For certain official purposes Hungarian law reserves hiteles fordítás to a designated state body, while a broad range of commercial, corporate, technical and EU-facing documents accept an agency certification. The two are not interchangeable, and paying for the wrong one is a common and avoidable waste. We tell you which your case needs before you commission anything.

Hungarian translation: common questions

Can you provide certified Hungarian translation?

For commercial, corporate, technical and most business purposes, yes — with our signed certification. For the specific categories where Hungarian law reserves certification to a designated state body, we will tell you plainly that our certification will not be accepted and what you need instead. We would rather lose the job than have your submission rejected.

Do you handle Hungarian software and website localization?

Yes, and we will look at how your strings are constructed before quoting. Concatenated interface strings that work in English routinely produce ungrammatical Hungarian, and the fix belongs in the source code, not in the translation.

Why is Hungarian a strength for you?

Business Team Translations was founded in Budapest in 1999 and Hungarian has been at one end of a large share of our work ever since — technical, legal, financial and institutional. It is the language where our terminology databases and translator relationships go back furthest.
