Certified vs. Notarized vs. Sworn Translation

Understanding which type of certification your submission requires saves time and prevents rejection. Requirements vary by country and institution.

Certified Translation

A translation accompanied by a signed declaration of accuracy from the translation agency or translator. The standard requirement in the UK, Ireland, the US (USCIS), Canada, and Australia, and accepted by most EU authorities for cross-border document submissions.

Notarized Translation

A certified translation whose certification signature has been authenticated by a notary public. The notary confirms the signature is genuine — they do not verify translation quality. Required for some US court submissions and certain official procedures in various jurisdictions.

Sworn Translation

Produced by a translator officially appointed by a government authority — a court or ministry. Required for official use in Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Poland, and most continental European jurisdictions where this system exists. We work with registered sworn translators in the relevant countries.

Language Coverage

We provide certified translation in 52 languages, including all EU official languages and a wide range of non-European languages.

European

English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Romanian, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Croatian, Serbian, Slovenian, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Greek, Ukrainian, Russian.

Non-European

Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean — for specific document types including banking, corporate, and immigration documentation.

04
Format confirmation

We confirm the certification format required by the receiving authority before beginning — requirements vary by country and submission context.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will your certified translation be accepted by the receiving authority?
Our certified translations are accepted across the EU, in the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, and many other countries, subject to the specific requirements of the receiving institution. We have never had a certified translation rejected on grounds of certification format. If you are uncertain about acceptance in a specific context, tell us and we will advise.
Do you need the original document?
No. A clear scan or photograph of the document is sufficient for translation purposes. The original does not need to be submitted to us.
How long does a certified translation take?
Most personal documents (birth certificates, diplomas, marriage certificates) are completed within 1–2 business days. Corporate documentation depends on volume. Urgent same-day or next-day delivery is available for most document types.
Can you post the certified translation as a hard copy?
Yes. Physical certified translations with signature, seal, and where applicable a dry seal, can be posted to any address upon request.
Can you certify translations of non-European languages?
Yes. We provide certified translation of Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Ukrainian, Russian, and other non-European language documents alongside all EU language combinations.
Can you handle apostilled documents?
Yes. We translate apostilled documents and can coordinate the apostille process for documents originating in Hungary and Ireland where required.
